SIAMANT@ - BASIS CONCEPT FOR PWR/BWR SPENT FUEL ELEMENTS

The SIAMANT@ - BASIS CONCEPT describes the general structure of the initial ceramic barrier and the procedure of waste encapsulation.
The existing HLW unit (spent fuel element with skeleton, bundle of single rods or cask with vitrified waste) is inserted in a SIAMANT@ canister and than potted with an appropriate material, preferably a composition which transforms to RISiC@ under the influence of radiation .
Afterwards the canister will be hermetically sealed with a lid .
In a final step the CANISTER IDENTICATION CODE and the SAFEGUARDS SEAL are laser engraved in the outer surface of the canister.
The SIAMANT@ - BASIS CONCEPT can be adapted and implemented in existing waste package concepts, allowing continued use of existing handling devices and technologies.
The picture demonstrates the various phases of encapsulation of a PWR fuel element type WWR 1000 A.
