UPGRADING GERMAN BSK 3 BY SSiC IN-LINER

The proposed supplementary ceramic barrier can be implemented in most existing waste package designs without changing the basic concept (an important fact for license procedures).

For example, upgrading of the German BSK 3 canisters by an SSiC in-liner is shown.

If a sufficient mechanical stability of the system FUEL RODS – POTTING COMPOUND – plus SSiC SHELL can be demonstrated successfully, than the outer steel canister can be replaced by a ceramic fibre braid for borehole handling.
