POTTING – IMPROVED SAFETY FEATURES

The potting material becomes very hard.
It contains many isolated pores – ideal tiny pressure vessels for the retention of fission gases. The diameter of the pores is up to 3 mm.
Because of the pores, the density is quite low (about 1.2 grams per cubic centimetre, resp. 37 % of dense silicon carbide).
Potting improves important safety features to a great extent. Positive effects are highlighted by improved:
- retention capability
- protection of SSiC (corrosion stability)
- heat conductivity
- seam tightness between segments
- sub-criticality
- overall mechanical stability
