INNER SURFACE PROTECTION LAYER

As mentioned above an extra layer at the inner wall of the ceramic barrier protects the SSiC against aggressive fission products like Silver (Ag) and Palladium (Pd).

Preferably, the protection layer should have properties like glassy-carbon.

This layer works also as an ion trap.  As a consequence, the diffusion of ionized radionuclides is reduced by COULOMB repulsion.

Both effects contribute to an increased long-term retention capability.
