LONG-TERM IMMOBILIZATION BY ENCAPSULATION IN SSiC

The disposal time is set into relation to the earth age of 4.5 billion years.
The goal is 100% radionuclide retention in the waste package for 1 Mio years.
For calculations, we used the available best-estimate diffusion coefficients.
Even for a small wall thickness of 1 cm SSiC, the breakthrough time shows excellent long-term immobilization for key radionuclides.
To assess the corrosion stability of SSiC in contact with Plutonium, Uranium and other actinides additional experimental data are required.
